Many changes in current Asics Gel Cumulus 22 and it is strange because last two editions also featured many new things. On one side it is fine to evolve and adapt to latest market trends but on the other side it gives the impression the japanese brand is not comfortable with just being one of the most popular rider among cushioned running shoes behind the top one Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37.
Typically something should remain in order to appreciate what is different, but in this case upper has beem completely revamped from its predecessor Gel Cumulus 21. To reduce potential complaints about mesh stiffness, Asics has chosen a seamless 3D printed design which adapts pretty well to different areas with several termofused elements ordered in a way that not only improve support but also enhance overall design. One interesting thing is that tongue is too fluffy, maybe too much even for those who look forward to really soft comfort.
Rest of Asics Gel Cumulus 22 keeps FlyteFoam® midsole with classic Gel® pads in both rear and forefoot, but only externally visible the first one. Outsole redesign follows trend already seen in its bigger sibling Gel Nimbus 22 with flex grooves in the forefoot playing a major role for a quicker and smoother transition. As usual in running shoes from the renowned japanese brand, there is more robust rubber (AHAR) in more exposed areas to increase durability.
